If you’re visiting Salida (and you should!), start your trip with this tour.

My husband and I were visiting from Denver and had never been in the area before. We really enjoyed that the tour provided us with so much perspective about Salida’s history and culture. There are a lot of fun stories to learn about! It meant that while we explored over the couple days that followed the area felt comfortable and familiar.

It was a really hot day, but we were relatively comfortable! Our host Steve was thoughtful about keeping us in the shade when he could and letting us know when there would be opportunities to sit down. The tour stops into a candy shop near the end where you can buy treats and ice cold water bottles. There really isn’t a huge amount of walking or ground to be covered, but there is plenty to see. The sidewalks are really wide and accommodating, and Steve really knows how to manage and navigate a crowd. So, don’t be too intimidated if you’re worried that it could be too much for you.

Also, the downtown area is unabashedly LGBTQ+ friendly and inclusive. Enjoy.

Loved the tour. Steve's obvious historical knowledge of the area makes the tour very interesting. I loved his dry humor, and his obvious care for locals and his community, always making sure we as tourists were mindful and courteous to locals.

A highlight of our trip to Salida! Huge thanks to Steve who was the expert storyteller and used a perfect mix of creep factor + dark humor! Myself and our 11 year old joined the tour group, we called ahead and Steve advised us that it may not be appropriate for our 8 year old (great advice and much appreciated!) but it was just right for our 11 year old who loves all things spooky and isn’t easily bothered by gory details.

We had several otherworldly encounters on our trip around downtown that added to the experience - including an eerie feeling at two stops that gave me the full body feels and a flickering light that mesmerized my stepdaughter. When we got back to our hotel that night, my almost 3 year old kept saying we brought back a ghost and pointing to our bed which, of course, terrified us all!

The next day we returned to one of the more tame spots, the Soda Shop, and my son again was pointing to a corner table saying there was a ghost sitting there. My partner went to take a photo of the outside windows where the Woman in White can supposedly be seen, and well, he may have captured a face peering out of the window! The ghost tour was the gift that kept giving! We had fun highlighting a few stops the next day (in the daylight) and I will say, the same building as the night before gave me another pounding headache and full body sensation when I walked by it again….

Thank you Steve! What a fun experience with the perfect mix of history and haunt! We can’t wait to do it again with the whole crew on our next family trip!

Had a great time with Steve on the Outlaws tour that we went back the next day to do the Ghost and Murder tour! He was very knowledgeable, funny, and did his best to keep us safe as we were walking. We had never been to Colorado before so I'm happy we came across this interesting activity to do!

Very worthwhile and fun even for this non-history-buff! Steve is full of accurate, funny, and engaging stories and was very sweet to my baby who tagged along in a carrier. I would 100% recommend doing if you’re visiting or if you live here!!

I cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Historical Salida is an amazing backdrop for this delightful walk through history. On the tour, our guide stayed lively, never was there a lull in the tour, nor was there a single moment less than entertaining and informative.
Salida had an extremely colorful past and Steve tells an articulate, concise tale of the grusome murders, unabashed indulgences, greed, jealousy and vigilantes. The stories of the struggles and scandals are brought to life all in the beautiful historical district of one of the most hip and upcoming little mountain towns in Colorado.
Steve takes a step back in time, speaks clearly into a headset, wears clothing reminiscent of the late 1800's. He is prompt and ready to impart his wealth of knowledge as soon as the business is out of the way. Really fun way to spend an evening. Especially if you have a mix of ages.
He makes subtle recommendations to businesses without pandering.
